About brake repair and adjustments
More about brake repair
I was attended on the vessel for brake repair, together with one senior colleague It was a good opportunity for me to find out more troubleshooting tips and to do myself what is written in the technical books. Better said to understand how does hydraulics work and how the adjustment of different hydraulic equipment are done.
Troubleshooter jobs, good and mad that you went through.Do you have A Great Story About it? Write and share them here.
We were there for troubleshooting of the cranes after undocking.
Most of the times after leaving dry docks still some jobs remain to do on the vessel. In this case due to time limitations in dry dock, we had to check some parameters.
The brakes were one of them.
We found some problems on the brakes. We had to troubleshoot the brake for luffing and hoisting winch.
For luffing winch the brake bands were worn out. Still we had to adjust the brake bands until they’ll change it.
Every brake has a pointer and scale. The pointer must always be within the limits of the scale. It means the pointer should be on the green area. Also the brake has a band balance indicator. This should be in the middle between the brake bands.
Check the crane equipment page and you’ll find out more about brakes.
Brake repair I've done on the vessel:
I proceeded according to technical book to made the brake adjustments. I had to use a big spanner for the adjusting nuts.
The brake had to be release first while you should tightened the adjusting nuts.
The problem is the space is very narrower, is grease all over the place and is slippery.
Two men are required for brake adjustment. One man is operating the crane joysticks and the other one is on winch adjusting the brake.
I had to tied a bit and then check the adjustment and so on, until I adjusted properly.
